Welcome, everyone!

Please, take a look at the following images and comment on whether you are familiar with these stereotypes and/or if you agree with them.

  1. I think stereotypes are really bad but sadly very common. One can never generalize but we still do it. The first set of "definitions" are really how the Americans see us/them, but it's not true.
The second image about the food I didn't get it.
The third set of pictures about the Americans, for a person who has spent some time there or with them, we know it's not true but that's the way people see them from outside.
On the other hand, I know another stereotype which says Americans (by the way I disagree with the term) are not very family-oriented but I most of the families I've known there are really tight-knitted families.

  2. Hi,Lamazza, the second image is the belief that those foods characterize the way all Mexicans eat. Do you think this is true? And yes, I also agree that the idea that Americans are not very family-oriented is only a stereotype.

  3. Stereotypes, when talking about people, I really do not agree it is correct to classify people as Hispanics, Latinos, American Latinos, however, this pictures reflect that this is how they are called in USA, and for some USA people it does not make much difference about Latinos, Hispanics... they still think and feel they are superior.

I also think we sometimes classify people in a some kind of stereotype by just knowing a little about their background, it could have part of a truth at a certain point because we can refer it to some habits people may have, the thing is that some people tend to classify them in a mocking way, and do not firstly try to think of people's virtues, and only think of bad behaviors; for example I have seen some pictures where show Mexican people using big hats, guaraches, drinking tequila...and some other things, or also Afro-American people as lazy people...

To conclude, I see that way of seeing things is changing, and Latin stereotypes are changing too, and for better...

  4. Nice comment, Ricardo!
I agree that some stereotypes originate from generalization, but don't we all tend to generalize if we lack information about other cultures? Mistaking a Chinese for a Japanese or Korean illustrates this point. Ask anyone and they'll tell you: "They all look the same". My answer is: "Yes, to the untrained eye". One of the objectives of this workshop is precisely to raise awareness on our need to "train our eyes", culturally speaking.
    Have a nice weekend,
    Arturo

  5. Since my point of view stereotypes represent a modern way of racial segregation.
The first set focus our attention in how "Americans" consider the Latin Americans and of course I disagree.
The second set represents how Mexican and Latin Americans immigrants adapt their cultural backgrounds into their new life in the USA.
The third cartoon shows some of the most common stereotypes of American citizens but I consider they are not totally true.
The lack of information produces generalizations that originates stereotypes.

  6. Hi! Good Morning Well, I think that Americans classify us in a really bad way; they think that Mexicans only eat tacos or burritos.
In the case of American stereotypes: <Americans consider themselves as the best nation in the whole world. But this is because they are so egotistical.

    1. Hi Zulema, Unfortunately to some Americans if you look like a Mexican you are a Mexican, although I would not generalize. About the food, well it also worjs the othrr way around; many people think that Americans only eat hamburguers, hot dogs and pizza. But we will talk about stereotypes a bit deeper during the course.
      Greetings

  7. Hello! In my opinion the fist picture explains the terms we usually use as synonyms... and they are not. We use them as a stereotype for a really wide range of people from different countries. The second picture... I don't think thats precisely a sterotype... that's what we eat and drink in real life! :) Third picture might be a sterotype on american people... but we can not generalize. Many americans love mexican food!

    2. Hi Eunice, you mention something interesting: making generalizations, that is something that is done very lightly many times. When do you think a certain comment about a culture becomes a stereotype?

      Delete
    3. When only have insights from a culture, which might come from people or media, and we decide to believe that is true despite our lack of information.

  8. I consider that sometimes people tend to generalize certain conducts and then they create a stereotype, but that generalization is just a consequence of the perception of an action that is repeated by a certain group of individuals, which means that not all the people have that kind of behaviors; that includes certain customs that each country has.

Stereotyping means that you are expectant that something will occur in a certain way, which restrains our conception about people from different nations, therefore, I disagree with it.

    1. Hi Melissa, it is true that stereotyping restrains our conception of different cultures, like that the French stink or that they all smoke; and that the Italians all scream when they speak or the Germans are all very cold and serious

As you say, it is common for people to expect that something will occurr in a certain way because of a general perception.

      Have a great day

  9. In my opinion, the first image reflects the way people in USA see Hispanics, Latinos and American Latinos. They may think this classification is not bad, but the truth is that nobody likes to be stereotyped. The same in the third image which shows how many people around the world see Americans. But you may not really feel bad about the second image if you take it as real Mexican food. It can be seen as Mexico is one of the countries which have a large variety of foods. I don’t really agree with stereotypes, because I consider that they tend to generalize; although I think that there are some “positive” stereotypes, for instance, English are punctual people. Japanese are hard-working employees.

    1. Hi Lilia, yes some stereotypes are "positive", but in general they tend to be negative and in some cases even hurtful. You just said it "nobody like to be stereotyped".

  10. In my opinion stereotypes make us ignore differences between individuals and most of them tend to convey a negative impression...

  11. Hello everyone! Interesting points of view.
I truly consider that stereotypes block our minds since the moment we don´t take the chance to see how different the people are from certain attributes that we we think characterize a group. It´s sad to hear people asking whether we have computers and cell phones at home in México (a Canadian once asked me that). It shows us that even with all this technology nowadays we still don´t take the chance to learn about each other.

  12. Hi!
The first image shows the fixed ideas that Americans have about Hispanics, Latinos or American Latinos. The second picture shows some of the most common dishes in our country, however, Mexican Gastronomy is wider and richer than that. The third image shows the way in which American Culture is perceived from others. I don´t agree with stereotypes. Unfortunately, it is common to classify or categorize societies or individuals, according to their appearance or customs.

  13. Hello (: It's always interesting to know how people can perceive a culture through their own eyes, the problem is that sometimes the only way some people have for learning about other culture is the TV. In fact, the stereotypes showed in the pictures are usually presented in cartoons or tv series, for example, The Simpsons which is one of the most popular cartoon in the US frequently use stereotypes, even American ones, and the audience sometimes think that those stereotypes are the reality and they start conceiving Mexican peolpe as drunk people wearing zarapes and eating tacos and chili.
Even when I consider interesting the different perceptions of a culture, I do not agree with stereotypes, because stereotiping is a consecuence of lack of information about something.

  14. I think that stereotypes are used either to offend r to make fun of somebody else. I´ve seen people in USA as well as in Mexico having these attitudes. I also think there is a bit of ignorance in this matter. because as Liliana says, some people tend to judge others without knowing the real contexts they live in.

  15. Hello everybody! From my point of view stereotypes are part of every culture, whether we like them or not. They will not disappear. Eventhough they are sometimes wrong cultural generalizations. On the other hand, it is a personal matter to believe them or to transfer them to our next generation.

  16. Hi to everyone!

I think that stereotypes are inevitable in every culture and in my personal experience I AM familiar with the stereotypes in the first picture due to the fact that I had the opportunity of living in The US and I faced these stereotypes myself. We can agree or desiagree with the stereotypes presented in the images but one thing is true stereotypes are part of culture and we have to learn how to deal with them.

  17. Hello everyone!

In my personal opinion, I think that stereotypes always try to overgeneralize people's lifestyles or certain perspectives about something. Even though it's not polite to use them in our daily life, it is something that lots of people rely on when they want to perceive someone's life.

In the first picture, I can see that many american people (probably) have several definitions in their minds. Personally, I think these definitions are correct and using them would be taken as offensive or anything like that, even they might sound impolite.

The second picture shows what americans think of Mexico about food. I also agree with the idea in the photo. However, I perceive that there may be other things about when we have Mexico in our minds.

Finally, the third picture shows what mexican people (probably) think of american people or lifestyle. Again, we tend to think all american are all the same or they like the same things. Obviously it is not always true.

I think stereotypes will always exist, even though we try to get rid of them. I also think it is part of our culture, unfortunately.

    Hi there everyone.
I think that one thing to keep in mind is that the USA is the biggest melting pot in the world and even though everyone is struggling to belong, they also have a strong background to defend. This is why there is a "china town", Calle 26 in chicago, and other cultural areas in the country. So stereo typing exists because we make it happen.

  19. Hello Everyone!

First of all I would have to say that stereotypes an be ggod or bad, depending on how they are used.

In this case, these stereotypes are a wrongful overgeneralization which is arbitrary and way far from reality itself. These characteristics that are being used are giving a general definition of the way of life, the food they consume, and the personal attributions of people because of where they live and their nationalities.

In other cases stereotypes are used in positive ways to have a general idea and allow you to have expectations from people and situations which will help have a more predictable and understandable world.

However, you should always keep in mind that we are unique human beings and therefore we are different from each other and that is what makes us very special.

  20. We define stereotypes as assumptions about what people are like. They are generalizations about a group that are simplified and do not acknowledge differences between members of that group. Nor do I find them to be funny or insightful, but I don’t like when people are reduced to stereotypes. In the images we see stereotypes viewed from the side of a Mexican and an american and in both there is the generalization toward each nationality.

  21. Hello everyone!
In my opinion Americans do think they are superior and see Latinos as people who come to USA to take off their job opportunities. But I think that even them they have racial problems, so it´s not only with Latinos. I consider that we Mexicans have many qualities that Americans don´t have like, education, traditions, culture and history. On the other hand we cannot generalize by saying that all Americans are negative and that they don´t have any qualities.
I remembered when I lived in the states that people used to tell me that we Mexicans live in a hut surrounded by cactus and ate only tacos. I used to tell them to read and travel to find out more about Mexico, I thought “all these guys lack of culture,” they wanted me to get angry and respond to their negative comments, I never did.
So, when we think that Americans only eat hamburgers, Italians pizza, British fish and chips, we are wrong. We do need to read and learn from other countries.

  22. Hi! I want to share with you my point of view about the stereotypes: it is a way of thinking that involves culture, feelings or maybe beliefs. It is not a think that can be good or bad. And about the images, that is stereotypes, to classified people characteristics.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that sterotypes are there all over the world and sometimes they can affect your life style but I think that you shouldn´t take them very personal because they are only generalizations and they are part of people's beliefs and they are also part of a cultue as well.

  24. I am familiar with these stereotypes.I do not agree with them because we cannot generalise people based on their culture, physical appearance and nationality. If we have preconceived judgements about people we might offend them. Unless we get to know them really well, we have to hold our opinions.

  25. I personally believe that the word stereotypes should not even exist in the the vocabulary because it could be taken on a positive or negative way and all it does at the end of the line; makes people angry or sad. Wouldn’t it be better to draw positive things about a society or particular group of people.. Thank you very much and have a good day!

  26. I deffinitely believe that stereotying a country, their people, their cultural heritage, roots, food habits, and traditions, as well, is quite a stupiid thing to do by someone who has studied up to certain level, and has achieved a degree of education.
Furthermore. This kind of guys who stereotype. are mentally disturved, and sufer from traumatic desorders,.In fact they are unadapted to any family, social group, oe even a country. so,. I wouldn´t take stereotypes seriously

  27. Hi!
Stereotypes are characteristics assigned to groups of people, generalize groups of people based on superficial things such as the skin color , culture or any other thing is unfair..no body is perfect, we must love people and focus in the good and positive.

  28. In my personal opinion, generalizating and stereotyping is not an accurate attitude, because eventhough a person will have similitudes with the people that live in the same country or local area, or people the same race, etc., each single person is unique, with his/her own ponits of vew, life story, education, decisions, beliefs, etc.

  31. Using stereotypes is definetly related to ignorance, I lived situations on both sides of the road and I´ve come to think only increasing your general knolwdge and culture, you will be able to shake off those types of paradigms.

  32. Positive or negative sterotypes are asumptions about an entire group or identity, which I consider imposible to happen. The positive ones may be affected when you find out the lack of those traits you are suppoed to have.

  33. Hello Everybody.

I think stereotypes are very common and I do not think that we can generalize a group or a person. I believe they are really bad and it is like wearing a tag, label people. I honestly think that Stereotypes are the view of the small-minded. I think we are all the same and we can never generalize but we still do it.

  34. I do not agree with stereotypes, neither the negatives nor the possitive ones. In order to. Learn from other countries we must avoid making generalizations and understand their customs and values.

  35. Even though stereotyping is very common, we should not generalize and jump into conclusions. I believe that stereotypes exist because there are some general characteristics that can help distinguish a certain group of people. However, these stereotypes can turn into prejudices and discrimination. We, as teachers, need to make students aware that these differences exist but we should never generalize.

  37. Sadly, our culture is sometimes seen as low-educated and limited and unfortunately when our people travel around the world they sometimes don't behave as they should. Say, for example the Mexican guys misbehaving in Brazil or the ones putting out the fire at the Arc the Triomphe in no ortodox way! The tendency to stereotype people for what we see or hear is dangerous because it often creates a false image of reality but unfortunately first impressions last forever. We should make this very clear to our students now that they are given the chance to travel abroad and spend a semester in another country. Be Mexican, behave like a Mexican but a smart one..
